Summary

There are several attempts to make small-gang roaming more fun. New ideas raise day by day about how POSses could be changed so that they give new target to roaming gangs but also a few (failed) features made it into game regarding this, for example the shootable station services which were told to be for roaming gangs.

While it is important to find new targets for roaming gangs, it would make sense to discuss where the old goals of roaming have gone to. The introduction of jumpdrives and other systems using this technology sealed the fate of roaming. Before these changes roaming gangs had strategic value:

  • They could prevent hostile logistics
  • They could prevent people from joining battles
  • They could even make profit on assaulting convoys

Right now roaming gangs are feeling a bit like griefing, they make have no strategic value whatsoever, and because of people chosing to use secure transportation methods like:

  • jump bridges
  • jump clones
  • jump freighters
  • titan bridges
  • personal carriers

Roaming gangs nowadays only get to fight the random noobs who do not have access or knowledge of these kinds of things.

Ideas

I cannot present a good solution to the problem depicted above, but would like to discuss this problem with CCP, hear their opinion about it. The few solutions I could come up with are way to drastic for the game to bear, and most of them would have made alliance logistics way too more difficult. To name a few, here is a list, but as I said, I would like to discuss this with CCP instead of giving a proposal:

  • make jump drives inaccurate so that they are less secure to be used
  • disallow cynosular fields right next to stations and POSses
  • make opening of cynosular fields more difficult, like beacon has to be up for 30 seconds before ships can jump to it
  • move jump bridges away from POSses so that they can be camped
