Summary

Everybody will agree that missions have a high payout for relatively low (but far from 0) risk. Not only do you get the meta 0 loot from NPCs to reprocess or sell, you also gain the bounties/salvage/security standings/corporation standings/mission rewards from the mission. Even mere ratting will be affected, although in a lesser way (as many players leave the wrecks after killing the NPCs, the rewards will be even higher, encouraging it more).

Given new information from CCP about refined NPC loot accounting for up to 40% of the minerals in the market, I feel this topic has an added urgency. Enacting this will accomplish a number of things:

  • A soft nerf to mission values, while still keeping them as an attractive option
  • A major boost to T1 equipment manufacturers, allowing them to be competitive and opening the market
  • A fair boost to mining, making it more lucrative for budding pod pilots

This idea only applies to meta 0 loot drops and ammunition, and does not apply to drone alloys, commander spawns, dog tags, etc.

Potential Solutions

  • No meta 0 loot, distribute tags for belt NPCs and increase early mission bonus
    • Pros
      • Removes the overabundance of T1 meta 0 goods in the market, giving manufacturers a chance to get started.
      • Reduces mineral influx, thereby making mining a lot more popular of an activity.
      • Easily modified in the core of the game by getting rid of all meta 0 equipment from loot tables for each empire/faction.
      • Reduces long-term ISK gain from missions, but makes immediate ISK gain slightly faster.
      • Early mission completion reward means that farming missions will become less attractive.
    • Cons
      • A small increase in the value of minerals until the gap can be compensated by increased activity in mining.
      • Might not be a good idea until mining is made more fun, to be submitted by myself in the future.
      • Small increase to the ISK gained by running missions, although more than compensated by the loss of high-value minerals.
      • Would require new tags or a reworking of the agents in space who require tags.

  • Compensate for the loss of the meta 0 loot from NPC drops by giving them a slightly higher chance of dropping items with meta levels of 1 or higher.
    • Pros
      • Removes the overabundance of T1 meta 0 goods in the market, giving manufacturers a chance to get started.
    • Cons
      • Value of meta 1+ goods will go down, which are in some cases cheaper than meta 0 goods.
      • Creates an unpredictable variance in mission rewards, as some meta 1+ goods have extremely high ISK values.
